We need you. We can’t have games without referees. More importantly, it’s rewarding and working with kids and adults is great fun!
You become a referee by attending and successfully completing a referee training course. As of July, 2013 U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) authorized two entry-level referee certifications: Recreational Referee Grade 9 and Referee Grade 8. However, Referee Grade 8 entry level is the most popular.
MBSL has positions available for qualified individuals.
Grade 8 Certification (to officiate Adult and youth competitive games)
Grade 9 Certification (to officiate U6 and U8 Recreational games)
Equipment such as the official US Referee Association approved shirt colors.

The referee is responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game in such a way as to keep the game safe, fair and fun for everyone: the players, the coaches, the spectators and themselves. He interferes with the game as little as possible, avoiding making calls for doubtful and trifling offenses. Referees only make calls for offenses they are sure to have occurred.

All referees who officiate games for the MBSL are not considered employees and are classified by the IRS as independent contractors. The Monterey Bay Sports League pays on a per-game basis and mileage is included for officiating games in the youth program.
Every referee must submit the MBSL a W-9 form filled out and signed in order to receive payment. Payments are processed every two weeks
